This report summarises the main consumers, reserves, production and probable life of current mines and identifies potential alternative sources. Shale reserves in the currently worked pits are sufficient for 50 years, white plastic clay at Golden Grove for 100 years and at McLaren Vale for 50 years. Land which can supply a further 40 to 50 million tonnes of brick shale needs to be reserved. Most pits exploit weathered Woolshed Flat Shale and Saddleworth Formation and these formations have the best future potential. Significant brick shale deposits exist north of Adelaide at Gawler - Concordia - Sandy Creek and near Shea Oak Log. South of Adelaide, potential pits exist near Baker Gully and in a weathered zone from Echunga to Kuitpo. Small reserves of kaolin are mined near Williamstown and Birdwood where there is potential for new discoveries.
