Removing mallee scrub for dryland farming increases rainfall penetration to the water table, increasing salinity and raising the water table. The usefulness of 3 electrical methods in mapping water penetration and rate of salt migration was examined. All appeared to map variations in soil salinity. Geonics EM-34 was most economical, but least detailed. TEM provided more detail, and increased depth penetration. VES provided most detail, but were most expensive. A combination of VES with one of the EM methods seems the most cost effective. Airborne EM might be useful, but at present is likely to lack both lateral and vertical resolution.
