Nepabunnas water supply has a salinity of 1300 mg/L and a high carbonate hardness (550 mg/L) which causes severe scaling in pipes. Artificial recharge was suggested as a means of introducing low salinity and hardness floodwaters into the aquifer. Backhoe pitting in the stream bed showed that the removal of thick clayey gravels and clays to enhance recharge was uneconomic. A diversion weir and storage were designed to capture floodwater for later injection and an injection well was drilled. SACON then reviewed the project and decided to proceed with water treatment rather than the artificial recharge scheme. The injection well may be suitable as a standby production well.
