A preliminary study was made of the near vertical coastal cliffs adjacent to Gordon and Stock Street, Aldinga. Continued landsliding of soil-strength cliff-forming materials and toe erosion by the sea have threatened the clifftop esplanade roadway, now only 5 metres from the cliff edge in places. Despite localized attempts to retard erosion, aerial photographs dating back to 1945 show an average rate of coastline retreat of about 20 metres per century. Recommendations include short-term safety action of realignment of the roadway and detailed studies of the coastal processes to aid future planning.
