A simple finite element groundwater model incorporating the main aquifer systems of the Mallee Region has indicated that the dramatic increase in recharge due to the clearing of native vegetation will lead to rising water tables and an increase in saline groundwater inflows to the River Murray. The salinity of the river at Morgan is predicted to rise by approximately 40 EC units in 50 years time. Selective broad scale revegetation in strategic areas could be effective in reducing groundwater inflows.
