The Katarapko sand deposit, 10 km SW of Berri has been a source of construction and filling sand since the 1940s. Coarse grained, fluvio-lacustrine Loxton Sands are currently mined for bricklayers sand, while overlying, finer, aeolian Woorinen Formation provides filling material. Coarse sand, suitable for construction purposes, has a Fineness Modulus greater than 2.0, but contains zones with a fines content greater than 5%. Washing or blending is required to bring this sand within specification. The deposit also contains some very coarse sand from which coarse filtration media could be obtained. Recorded production for the past 10 years has varied between 2 000 and 4 000 tonnes / year. Mineable reserves within the lease area total 740 000 tonnes and include an estimated 90 000 tonnes of filling sand and 10 000 tonnes of very coarse sand.
