The Proterozoic tectonic evolution of the southern margin of the Eastern Officer Basin is closely related to evaporite mass movements and diapirism. Seismic interpretation suggests that these movements occurred when increased subsidence in the northern part of the basin (Munyarai Trough) induced the northward gravity sliding of the sedimentary cover upon evaporitic layers of the Alynia beds. The deposition of Proterozoic sediments ended with the cutting and infilling of deep erosional canyons. The Proterozoic evaporitic structures were further reactivated by gentle thrusting and folding during the Alice Springs Orogeny. The hydrocarbon play concepts within the Proterozoic associated with evaporite movements are : tilted fault blocks resulting from the sliding of the cover; domal and fault dependent closures above or along side of diapiric structures; and palaeoreliefs inherited from the canyon cutting event.
