Contains a statement of intent inviting PEL applications by 31/5/91 over 4 blocks of vacant onshore petroleum exploration acreage totalling 44 300 square kms in the northeastern Officer Basin of South Australia. Three of the blocks lie wholly within Aboriginal freehold lands: Areas K and L are in the Pitjanjatjara Lands and Area N is in the Maralinga Tjarutja Lands. The tribal traditional owners of the Pitjanjatjara Lands have expressed keen interest in entering joint ventures with petroleum exploration companies to foster new exploration on their lands. Noteworthy previous petroleum exploration work in the region during the 1980s includes that of Comalco Aluminium Ltd in PELs 23 and 30, and that of an Amoco Australia Petroleum Company-led consortium, which included a carried interest of the Pitjanjatjara people, in PEL 29. Their activities plus those of Government geological survey organisations in earlier years have enabled the preparation of a substantial data package containing a selection of regional gravity and magnetic data, seismic sections, well completion reports from petroleum, mineral and stratigraphic wells, and relevant geological maps. This selection is intended to form the basis for interested parties' assessment of each area, but is not proffered as being totally comprehensive. A brief SADME review of the geology and hydrocarbon potential of the Officer Basin is also included, besides details of the data package contents, a bibliography, and advice on licence application procedures.
