A seminar designed to heighten industry interest in South Australia as a place in which to search for minerals and petroleum was organised by the Department of Mines and Energy at the Australian Mineral Foundation on 13 December 1990. A number of data packages relating to the State's petroleum and mineral potential, compiled by the Department, were promoted. The seminar attracted 280 registrants, including 90 representatives from mining companies, 30 from petroleum companies, 30 from petroleum and mining service industries, and 30 from educational institutions. The balance represented State and Federal Government departments, Anangu Pitjantjatjara and Maralinga Tjarutja Councils, universities and the legal profession. The involvement of industry personnel in presentation of papers and chairing sessions made a significant contribution to the success of the seminar. A trade exhibition was mounted in the foyer, with 18 industry booths featuring drilling, laboratory, computing and other services, and 6 booths related to the Department's activities and services. A geological excursion to the newly discovered Frankton - Truro lamprophyre province, which is prospective for diamonds, was conducted on 14 December and was attended by 25 geologists. Seminar presentations highlighted mineral commodities which are considered to show promising exploration potential. Despite the State's extensive cover of surficial deposits, advances in geological mapping, scientific studies and drilling continue to improve understanding of South Australia's geological history and provide assistance with exploration of local mineral and petroleum resources.
