Due to substantial funding by NERDDC of this project, over 850 new core plugs from 46 wells in the Cooper Basin in South Australia were analysed to provide a database for improvement of porosity and water saturation log analysis algorithms currently in use. All plugs were measured for porosity and permeability at both laboratory and reservoir pressure, wet chemistry cation exchange capacity (CEC), and absolute grain density. Selected plugs were analysed for multiple salinity electrical properties to enable determination of the factors m and n for use in the Waxman-Smits saturation equation and to verify the wet chemistry CEC determinations. Using this database, correction factors have been determined which convert porosity and permeability measured at ambient laboratory conditions to overburden conditions. A new empirical porosity equation, based on the sonic log, has been developed for Cooper basin reservoirs which includes a correction for both shale and gas effects. It results in demonstrably more accurate core to log porosity comparisons compared to empirical equations currently in use.
