A working party of SADME and EASAMS staff has made a comprehensive study of the Department's geoscientific systems (GEOSIS). It was initially concerned with the potential applications of geographical information systems, because most of SADME's scientific data has a geographical or spatial component. The objective was to recommend feasible options and to develop strategies and action plans for the development and improvement of these systems. The study concluded that SADME should commence a major reworking and integration of its geoscientific information systems based on the use of Open Systems technology. Apart from improving SADME's internal operations, major benefits would flow to the resources industry and the State.
