During the period December 1989 to March 1990, exploratory drilling undertaken by SADME Mineral Resources Branch over the northern part of Kangaroo Island investigated the potential for base and precious metal mineralisation within rocks of the Cambrian Kanmantoo Group. The drilling was concentrated near the Cygnet and Snelling Faults, both of which are deep-seated structures (approximately coincident with the southern margin of the Gawler Craton, and with the transition from shelf to trough sedimentation in the Cambrian succession) showing evidence of repeated movement since the Cambrian. On mainland SA, Cambrian Kanmantoo Group metasediments host economic base metal mineralisation, and on Kangaroo Island several small Pb, Zn, or Au prospects are known to lie along these two major faults. The drilling campaign comprised 442 vertical RC holes totalling 6772.5 m, put in along 22 north-south traverses at 500 m spacing, with closer spaced holes drilled across the faults or close to known prospects. The drilling and some related geological mapping done by SADME have indicated a number of occurrences of mineralisation that warrant further exploration: - lead and zinc - enriched lithologies within the Kanmantoo Group, e.g. to the west of Parndana; - anomalous gold distributed along the Cygnet Fault, associated with limonitic boxworks, bleaching and silicification in sandstone and minor siltstone; - siliceous and brecciated fracture zones containing anomalous gold at the Grainger mine, and anomalous lead and zinc at Western River; and - anomalous lead and zinc contained in fine anastomosing quartz or quartz/chlorite veins at the Grainger mine and Dewrang magnetic anomaly, adjacent to the Cygnet and Snelling Faults. The widely spaced and extremely anomalous values (2.69% Zn, 0.45% Pb, and 1.7 g/t Ag over 16 m) at the Grainger mine deserve immediate evaluation.
