SADME stratigraphic drillhole Ruby Hill 1 was sited 10.4 km east of William Creek, and was designed to penetrate Early Cretaceous rocks of the Eromanga Basin and to sample pre-Mesozoic basement. It intersected 191 m of the Eromanga Basin sedimentary sequence before penetrating weathered (for 25 m) and then fresh, Permian or Sturtian glacial diamictite which was fully cored for 6 m to reach the hole's total depth (224 m). The occurrence of vitrinite and plant matter in the diamictite strongly argues a Palaeozoic age, but its lithology strongly resembles Sturtian diamictite. Also, the drill site is located some distance east of the currently defined limits of the Permian Arckaringa Basin. [In 1989, the completed open drillhole was converted to a water bore - this action was accompanied by a renaming of the hole as 'Turks bore'].
