A drill core sample of white bryozoal limestone taken from 156.9 m depth in hole Caringa 1 drilled near Karoonda in the Murray Basin was dated palaeontologically using the sediment's foraminiferal fauna. An early Late Eocene age was determined, which correlates biostratigraphically with the Buccleuch Group. A trangressive littoral to shallow marine environment of deposition has been interpreted as perturbing an overall regressive sedimentary regime prevailing at that time, which generated an enveloping lacustrine lithological sequence.
