Recent advances in the understanding of the target Cambrian stratigraphy and its palaeogeographic setting, in combination with a realistic mineralization model, have established that the southern Arrowie Basin platform margin could be host to a Mississippi Valley - type (MVT) metallogenic province of significance. Detailed field studies of primary lead-zinc sulphide mineralization within Lower Cambrian carbonates have confirmed its MVT classification, and have established its relationship to later, Delamerian willemite zinc ore deposits. New concepts concerning aspects of the transport and emplacement mechanisms of MVT mineralisation are described. An assessment of the impact of Tertiary to Recent weathering history on MVT mineralisation in the northern Flinders Ranges now offers possible new opportunities for discoveries of this deposit type in areas previously discarded by explorers who were discouraged by dismal results from the testing of secondary, dispersed geochemical signatures. A comprehensive literature review of previous exploration was generated to identify possible features worthy of field investigation, and to provide intending explorers with a springboard data package for programme generation.
