Between February and April 1991, 7 deep investigation wells were drilled at 4 separate sites in the southern Mt Lofty Ranges. Each well was constructed with either single, dual or triple completion piezometers, depending upon the groundwater intersects encountered. Sites were chosen to supplement currently monitored shallow observation well networks. Each site has a defined land salinisation problem, and an ongoing infrastructure for collecting and collating data. Long term remediation of the affected land is the desired outcome. Groundwater salinities generally showed an increase with depth for wells drilled on higher ground (ridge areas), with the salinity trends being reversed for those wells drilled in the valley floor (discharge areas). The dominant ions from these wells are sodium and chloride, with bicarbonate and sulphate being of high concentration in some samples.
