This report provides information for a management plan addressing the problems of dryland salinity and surface water flooding in the area from Keith to Naracoorte, west of the Keith to Naracoorte road. Data shows a general rise in groundwater levels resulting in varying degrees of land degradation by salinisation of the soil profile, water logging and an accumulation of salt at the land surface. The cause is increased recharge as a result of the clearance of native vegetation, the loss of perennial lucerne pastures in the late 1970's and the development of non-wetting characteristics of various soils. Land degradation will continue until a new groundwater equilibrium is reached. This may not occur for some decades. An assessment of the influence of an existing groundwater drain has shown that groundwater drainage schemes will form an important part of a total remediation strategy. Additionally, the groundwater drainage schemes are the only management options that can lead to short term and immediate control of groundwater levels. Improved land management practices to reduce the rates of recharge to the aquifer are also considered necessary, both within the study area and in the region to the east.
