Palynological and dispersed cuticle analysis of drill core and cutting samples from exploration wells at Andrew's Farm housing development, Munno Para, has dated the subsea depth interval 99 - 171 metres as Middle to late Middle Miocene. The top of the section is stratigraphically equivalent to sediments very near to, or within, the Munno Para Clay Member. The older sediments are believed to be equivalent to those of the Port Willunga Formation. The high frequency and diversity of dinoflagellates, and presence of teredinal boring in wood samples, suggests a marine environment persisted at the time of deposition. Palynology suggests a regional subtropical vegetation initially dominated by Nothofagus, Casuarina, gymnosperms and ferns, becoming more sclerophyllous with the loss of Nothofagus and introduction of the Myrtaceae. This floristic change would suggest there was a gradual drying of the climate during the Middle to late Middle Miocene.
