Reassessment of age frequency of published and unpublished radiocarbon dates from the Strzelecki Desert and Lake Frome - Lake Callabonna region in northeastern South Australia has delineated some Late Pleistocene climatic events. These include aeolian carbonate deposition at 22-14 Ka BP, followed b y rapid sedimentation and gypsum crystallisation at 14-12 Ka BP during the chang e from the last glacial maximum to the present interglacial. There is also an increase in alluvial sedimentation from around 4-3 Ka BP, perhaps accompanied by increased scrub firing. Radiocarbon dates delineate a carbonate peak at 34 to 30 Ka, attributed partly to contamination by old carbonate. An attempt to identify such events in gypsum profiles using uranium series dating was generally unsuccessful due to the ready reworking of gypsum with recrystallisation lower in the profile. However, some consistent dates were obtained, especially from playas and proximal fans, which suggests widespread highly saline watertables around 5-4 Ka BP. Trends in uranium isotope ratios of the younger gypsum, now recrystallised lower in profiles than older, higher gypsum, suggest a vertical leaching mechanism in the unsaturated sediments may be a significant mechanism of gypsum reworking. Methodology for uranium series dating of gypsum, celestite and carbonate is outlined.
