As part of the South Australian Exploration Initiative, the use of high resolution aeromagnetic and radiometric surveying in petroleum exploration was tested in Block B5 west of Moomba. A number of associated studies were undertaken to utilise the airborne data. Sediment thickness from seismic lines and magnetic susceptibility from rock samples was used to model magnetic response from the sediments. Circular intrusive like anomalies were modelled with variable depth and rock types. Faults which cut the base Permian reflectors were mapped to compare to magnetic and radiometric anomalies, east-west anomalies were checked out with surface magnetic and magnetic susceptibility surveys and NOAA satellite thermal data was analysed to locate near-surface drainage patterns. Aeromagnetic images were compared to 3D seismic structural images in the Lake Hope area and radiometric data in various forms was overlain with oil and gas field maps and landsat imagery to check for effects of hydrocarbon leakage.
