Further investigations have been undertaken within certain areas along the State Border of South Australia and Victoria to assess both vertical groundwater recharge rates and their spatial variability, based on surficial geology, groundwater and land use factors. Groundwater recharge in the study area occurs by three main processes - diffuse recharge, point source and lateral groundwater throughflow. The sustainable volume of groundwater available for use in specific areas is based on the diffuse and point source recharge rates. The study area was divided into three main recharge zones according to soil type, morphology and hydrogeological conditions. These recharge zones were further subdivided to reflect depth characteristics of soil types, vegetation cover and landuse. Recharge rates for the sub-zones were determined from the analysis of hydrographs for observation wells located through the study area. The assessed recharge rates show a degree of variability, and range from 10 to 20 mm per annum. These recharge values are comparable with those of previous hydrogeological studies, but are considerably higher than those obtained from previous hydrochemical investigations. The volume of vertical recharge for some zones is greater than the current Permissible Annual Volume (PAV) of groundwater available for extraction, therefore the results of this study should be used in the forth-coming review of the zone PAVs.
