RB 94/00043 Brukunga drilling, 1993-1994.

This report details drilling programs carried out by MESA at and near the Brukunga open-cut pyrite mine and tailings dam areas in the period 6/5/93 to 14/4/94. A total of 29 wells were drilled within the tailings dam, the spoil heaps and on the hills above the principal mine bench area. These include 14 groundwater observation wells, of which 7 are located in the tailings dam and 6 to the west of the mine, whilst another well completed in the spoil heaps is a dual completion, being used for water observation and oxygen profiling purposes. The remaining wells were drilled for oxygen profiling in the tailings dam and spoil heaps. These drilling programs were undertaken in consultation with and as part of studies carried out by an independent consultancy, hired by caretaker mine manager SA Water on the recommendation of the Brukunga Steering Committee to investigate the generation, impact and remediation of acid mine drainage emanating from the site.
