More than 400 samples (cuttings and core) from 26 petroleum wells in the South Australian part of the Gambier Basin were examined. Their lithology and foraminiferal fauna were recorded and their age and environment of deposition deduced where possible. Formation tops are listed for each well and representative cross sections are provided. The new data, combined with existing information, have been used to construct a stratigraphic column for the area. The ages of the Pebble Point, Dilwyn and Narrawaturk Marl Formations have been refined. The Pebble Point Formation is extended up into the Malvacipollis diversus palynozone, and the ages of the youngest Dilwyn Formation and Narrawaturk Marl are regarded as Proteacidites confragosus palynozone and P17 planktonic foraminiferal zone respectively. The Narrawaturk Marl is thought to grade laterally into the lowermost Gambier Limestone, at least south of the Penola Trough axis, while the Compton Conglomerate is placed at the base of the middle Gambier Limestone and is found only where the lower Gambier is missing. The previously recognised three fold division of the Gambier Limestone has been slightly modified and more precise ages have been assigned to each unit. The Gellibrand Marl is identified for the first time in South Australia. The stratigraphy of the South Australian part of the Gambier Basin is related to local sea level events and the global sequence stratigraphy and eustatic curve. The Pebble Point and Burrungule Ingressions mark the beginning and end of Pebble Point Formation deposition respectively, and onset of the Chinaman Gully Regression appears to correlate with the top of the Narrawaturk Marl. The base of the upper Gambier Limestone probably corresponds to the Clifton Transgression. The top of the Pember Mudstone may be correlated with the base of the TA3 supercycle, and the age of the base of the Narrawaturk Marl is approximately coeval with the Type 1 sequence boundary at the beginning of TA4. The base of the middle Gambier Limestone is interpreted as representing at least part of the gradation from the TB1 sequence boundary to its correlative conformity.
