As part of a joint MESA/ETSA exploration program for coal in the Hawker area, 34 sand-gravel bulk-samples of Tertiary and Quaternary age were collected from 10 drillholes, and submitted to ALS Laboratories for geochemical analysis to test for kimberlitic indicator elements. Four sample intervals were interpreted as having anomalous results and the bulks of these were submitted to Independent Diamond Laboratories to search for, and identify, any indicator minerals present. Three minerals of possibly kimberlitic origin were recovered from one of the samples showing that the geochemical method can be used as an effective tool in diamond exploration. It is thought likely that the indicator minerals recovered have been eroded from a conglomerate outcrop in the nearby Boolcunda Creek from which 2 micro-diamonds have previously been recovered.
