An interest by Carnegie Minerals prompted an investigation of the north and western side of Lake Eyre to locate palaeodrainage of possible economic significance. NOAA-AVHRR satellite images were processed over the area, paying particular attention to the dune covered regions. Palaeodrainage hidden beneath the dune sands becomes visible with the use of NOAA-AVHRR satellite images due to the difference in thermal inertia between the desert sands, compared to the channel fill sediments. A series of features which appeared to represent stream cut-offs and diversions were interpreted as palaeochannels and features parallel to the shore of Lake Eyre as palaeoshorelines.
