A detailed petrographic study of Permian sandstone drill cuttings and core samples selected from 32 drillholes variously located within the Officer, Arckaringa and Pedirka Basins was undertaken, with the intent of trying to classify the sandstones as a basis for attempting regional inter-basinal stratigraphic correlations of mappable units, utilising interpreted like facies, provenance, depositional history, etc. Another task was to look for possible previously unrecognised trace microscopic evidence of migrated hydrocarbons remaining within the pore space of these sandstones, which might point to the proximity of leaky petroleum traps within older sedimentary sequences.
