A study of aeromagnetic data, geology maps and drilling results from the vicinity of Lake Torrens indicates an area of buried, interconnected and possibly thick sediments which may be of Cambrian and/or Adelaidean age. This area extends for approximately 120 km north - south, and varies in width from 15 km to 50 km east - west. The interpreted Palaeozoic sediments subcrop from 20 km west of Nilpena in the north, down to Warrakimbo in the south. They appear to thin in their southern part onto a saddle which separates them from the Cambrian sediments intersected in the 20 Wilkatana wells located 25 km to the south. Hydrocarbon shows were reported in a number of these wells. The predicted sediments may be prospective for hydrocarbons. An area of structural complexity approximately 20 km across is indicated, extending from the Old Motpena 1 well in the north to Moralana Creek in the south. Petroleum exploration is recommended, focusing first on the area of predicted structural complexity near Old Motpena 1. Recommended work includes geological mapping using NOAA-AVHRR and any outcrops, the conduct of a seismic survey, study of cores and cuttings, the conduct of detailed gravity surveys, further interpretation of the aeromagnetic data, and drilling.
