MESA has recently undertaken, on behalf of the South Australian Department of Environment and Natural Resources, a landscape rehabilitation project to ameliorate the residual environmental impacts of a mineral exploration program carried out 15 years ago in former Crown Land areas which are now the Pureba Conservation Park and Nunnyah Conservation Reserve in the Far West of South Australia. Access tracks and drill holes created in the early 1980s were actively rehabilitated during March and April 1996. The tracks were ripped to 600mm using a Komatsu D85A with a three tine ripper, while drill holes were backfilled manually using volunteer labour supplied by the Australian Trust for Conservation Volunteers. Forty-four vegetation regeneration monitoring points were established on the former track sites. The project has achieved its objectives of discouraging third party access, making safe abandoned drillholes and encouraging vegetation regeneration, and provides a useful model for future rehabilitation projects.
