Mines and Energy South Australia are currently investigating the geometry and ore grades of banded iron formation deposits within the Gawler Craton near Coober Pedy, for possible use in the production of pig iron. Core samples from five diamond cored boreholes were logged to determine and compare the geotechnical features of soil and rock materials at the Hawks Nest, Sequoia, Giffen Well and Peculiar Knob prospects. The detailed logging defined such aspects as division of engineering geological units, rock substance strength, degree of weathering, Rock Quality Designation and a description of rock mass defects and structure. A brief inspection of core from the Peculiar Knob prospect was also carried out to compare the general geotechnical aspects of this site with other sites. This report is intended to be a preliminary phase geotechnical characterisation of each of the sites, from which further detailed geotechnical investigations can be carried out.
