Because of the close interaction between surface water and groundwater in the Torrens River catchment, a number of groundwater issues were highlighted as a contribution to the Torrens Catchment Water Management Plan. These include the potential for rising watertables (resulting from clearing) to cause dryland salinity and an increase in surface water salinity, and the possibility of groundwater transporting pollutants from diffuse (agriculture) and point (landfill) sources to surface water. Overexploitation of groundwater resources could result in reduced streamflows and environmental degradation. Opportunities for aquifer storage and recovery projects were identified to make better use of all water resources in the catchment, and recommendations made for an assessment of groundwater resources and monitoring of groundwater levels and quality.
