As part of the South Australian Steel and Energy Project, MESA targeted Palaeoproterozoic banded iron formation (BIF) at Hawks Nest as a possible iron ore resource. Detailed ground magnetic, gravity and drilling programmes identified seven deposits; Kestrel, Buzzard, Goshawk, Harrier, Eagle, Falcon and Kite. Three types of iron ore were encountered: - Low grade magnetite BIF, of which the largest orebody occurs at Kestrel deposit, with an Indicated Resource of 250 Mt @ 36.4% Fe. Beneficiation tests conducted on samples of this ore indicate that a high grade iron concentrate of greater than 64% Fe, with very low levels of alumina and phosphorus, may be readily produced; - High grade magnetite horizons (up to 69% Fe), of unknown lateral extent but up to 150 m wide, occurring within low grade magnetite BIF at the Kestrel and Kite deposits; - High grade haematite at the Buzzard deposit, with an Indicated Resource of 5 Mt grading 60% Fe. Further drilling is recommended at the Kestrel and Kite deposits to define a high grade magnetite resource.
