Groundwater provides about half of the water used for irrigation, domestic and industrial purposes in the Barossa Valley. This resource has in the past been overstressed, leading to widespread water level declines and salinity rises. These observations suggest that current local agricultural practices are unlikely to be sustainable. In 1989, the use of groundwater was restricted under the Water Resources Act, by which allocations of extractable water were given to irrigators and other major users. Resultant reduction in the rates of water level decline suggests that the stress on the local groundwater resource has decreased significantly, however, the problem of saline groundwater is still of concern. To address this issue, artificial recharge to the local aquifer system using low salinity, surface runoff water is being trialed. Trials have given favourable results and further implementation is being encouraged. Besides the improvement in groundwater quality so gained, an additional benefit is an increased volume of stored water in the aquifers that will lead to a more sustainable future for the region. To monitor the effects of enhanced recharge on the aquifer system and surface waters, a groundwater recharge policy and procedural guidelines were needed. Drafts of these documents have been compiled using information from this report.
