Notes: These notes are an accompaniment for the following field excursion guide to the Olary Domain, and provide a general description of the geology of the region. Recent overviews of the geology of the Olary Domain are given by Flint and Parker (1993) and Laing (1996). Many observations incorporated into this report have come from Honours students involved in the "Olary Block Mapping Project", a collaborative scheme between the Universities of Melbourne and New England, and from the PhD theses of Cook (1993) and Bierlein (1995). The Olary Block Mapping Project has been ongoing through the period 1990-1996, with 32 Honours projects being completed. Approximately 2000 square km have been mapped, mostly at a scale of 1:10,000. The mapping results have been one of the major sources of data for recent Mines and Energy South Australia (MESA) 1:25,000 map compilations of the region as part of the Broken Hill Exploration Initiative (BHEI), and have provided some of the background for Laing's (1996) interpretations. The data have also augmented MESA's independent mapping in parts of the Olary Domain since 1995 as part of the BHEI. The Olary Block Mapping Project has been financially supported by MESA, a consortium of mineral exploration companies and the Australian Geological Survey Organisation (AGSO). Additional research, concentrating on geochemical, mineralogical and geochronological studies, has been supported by Australian Research Council grants, and by MESA and North Limited. Outcomes of some of this research have already been published and are referred to in this report; other research, including the PhD study by David Lawie, is currently ongoing. One of the results of the Honours and other research projects is the generation of two extensive geochemical data bases, one containing about 650 whole rock major and trace element analyses, the other containing about 500 regolith analyses, including gossans. The latter forms part of David Lawie's PhD study.
