The Oak Valley Community requires a more convenient water supply. If potable groundwater cannot be found then a supply suitable for purification must be found. Current requirements are a supply of 1 L/s of water of salinity not greater than 40 000 mg/L. A previous search (1995) within 5 km of Oak Valley found water that met these guidelines, but was too acidic and had other undesirable constituents. The search has therefore been extended to a range of 70 km. A study of air photographs and other data resulted in the selection of six areas, of which five were tested with Transient Electromagnetic (TEM) surveys. Five bores were drilled, resulting in three producing wells with yields of 4.0, 0.1 and 0.25 L/s. The water in all three wells is saline, with a TDS comparable to that of sea water. One existing well, Clarke's Well, was also pump-tested, but proved too difficult to develop for a satisfactory test. The prognosis for additional supplies of water in this area is not good, other than for sources similar to those already found. The potential for recharge is very limited, and those locations where appreciable quantities of such runoff water might collect have now been fairly adequately tested, although not totally exhausted. Clarke's Well is the best prospect for low salinity local recharge water, but requires extensive work to redevelop the well. The Irish Well and Clarke's Well areas have some potential for lower salinity local recharge water. Currently, Irish Well 2 is the only established supply of water in sufficient quantity for requirements, and appears acceptable for desalination. There is every confidence that a backup for this well could be found in the same area.
