Recently, residents from the SA township of Callington contacted authorities regarding anomalous levels of copper found in soils at their town properties. Subsequently, the State Environment Protection Agency, the Mount Barker Council and the SA Department of Primary Industries and Resources (PIRSA) have commissioned a 'Preliminary Site Investigation' to determine whether this site is contaminated with heavy metals. PIRSA's Mineral Resources Group designed a soil sampling programme to cover the potentially contaminated area (500 x 600 m) with a 100 m line spacing and sample points 100 m apart along the lines. Australian Standard AS4482.1 was used as a guide for the design and implementation of this survey. Soil samples were taken from depths between 0-200 mm and 200-400 mm, then analysed at a NADA approved laboratory for Cu, As, Pb, Zn, Ni, Cr, Cd, Hg and Au. Of the assayed elements, only copper (Cu) and arsenic (As) were present in concentrations that exceed the recommended level of contaminants in residential soils, as set by the Environment Protection Agency. Anomalous gold (Au) results were indicated from several soil samples taken in close proximity to the historical Bremer Mine site. As the copper (Cu) and arsenic (As) results are above recommended levels for the soils in close proximity to and surrounding the historical Bremer Mine, this site within the township is considered contaminated. It is recommended that a 'Detailed Site Investigation' be instigated to determine the environmental and social impacts of this contamination.
