The two-day Cooper 99 petroleum symposium organised by PIRSA's Petroleum Group was attended by 160 local and overseas delegates. The prime intent was to announce the release, for competitive tender, of 11 exploration blocks within the soon-to-expire Petroleum Exploration Licences 5 and 6 in the Cooper Basin portion within South Australia. This will provide a rare opportunity for petroleum explorers to acquire highly prospective acreage in Australia's largest onshore petroleum producing basin. The expiry of these licences in February 1999 has fortuitously coincided with the delivery by the State Government of a component of its competition policy that will see the removal of impediments to free trading in natural gas. This will provide a further incentive to attract new explorers to the basin. It is expected that successful tenderers will be announced shortly after bid closure in March 1999.
