Recently imposed water resource management controls in the Angas - Bremer Irrigation Area have reduced the local irrigators' aggregate groundwater allocation to within the sustainable limits of the basin, primarily by conversion of their licences from the use of groundwater to Murray River-sourced water. In response, the local confined aquifer pressure is returning towards its pre-irrigation level, and watertables are rising. Modelling was undertaken to assess the risks, with respect to rising watertables and salinisation, which may be associated with continued development of irrigation in the area. This work indicates that an increased importation of Murray River water into the area will result in rising watertables, particularly in the area to the south of Langhorne Creek. The historically shallow-watertable area adjacent to Lake Alexandrina may in future not be put at as great a risk by this practice as had been believed, although even small rises in this area would be very significant for flooding and salinisation risks. With increased use of Murray River water, the northern portion of the irrigation area may also be similarly detrimentally affected in the longer term. In addition, it appears that a general slow deterioration of groundwater quality is likely to be inevitable everywhere across the irrigated region.
