In response to a request for assistance from the State Heritage Branch, a suite of 56 sand samples has been collected from all major currently producing sand pits in the outer metropolitan area. Physical properties including grain size, grain roundness, colour and fines content are detailed in a data sheet for each of the sands. This database is intended mainly to assist in the design of mortars for use in conservation or renovation of older buildings. Copies of this database and suites of reference samples are to be stored by PIRSA, State Heritage Branch, and the City of Adelaide. If the database proves to be sufficiently useful, the current sampling program should be extended to include quarry sands and sands from country areas.
