Twenty-six sites for water wells to supply isolated homelands and small settlements were selected within the northwest Aboriginal lands of South Australia. Satellite imagery, aerial photography, viewing of the sites from a light aircraft, on-ground examination of geology and drainage patterns, and study of past drilling results were all used in site selection. Thirteen of the sites were drilled, with seven wells proving successful and six being failures. The successful wells were discharge tested. All wells but one showed isotropic flow characteristics; the other (at Ulaypai) showed a strip aquifer response. Recommended maximum one year sustainable yields ranged from 26 to 790 KL/day, while transmissivities ranged from 1.8 to 220 square metres /day.
