Palynological analyses of nine grab samples from the Lochiel coal test pit show two distinct floristic types, i.e. Haloragacidites spp. dominated and Nothofagidites spp. dominated palynofloras. This distinction is interpreted as indicating a change in vegetation after deposition of the coal deposits. Generally the environment is non-marine (fluvial-deltaic), but the presence of dinoflagellates cysts (i.e. Spiniferites spp., Achomosphaera sp., Cyclonephelium sp.) in four samples indicates some marine influence (brackish/paralic). A single specimen of Fischeripollis (aff. Droseraceae) has been identified. The samples are dated Late Eocene to Early Oligocene.
