Alcurra is located near the eastern margin of the Proterozoic Musgrave Province. The region includes rocks from two distinct geological provinces, the eastern limit of exposure of the Musgrave Province, and the north-western margin of the Mesozoic Eromanga Basin. The basement of Alcurra is composed predominantly of amphibolite to granulite facies Birksgate Complex gneisses which are intruded by a number of granitoid bodies of the Pitjantjatjara Supersuite. Unconformably overlying this basement are sediments of the Eromanga Basin, the Neogene Hamilton Basin and Quaternary aeolian and alluvial/fluvial sediments. Work on the current 1:100 000 mapsheet began in mid 2013 and included extensive additional mapping that was completed by May 2014. A significant amount of petrographic, geochemical, isotopic and geochronological data was also collected and analysed to complement field observations.
