Tieyon is located on the eastern margin of the Proterozoic Musgrave Province. The region includes rocks from two distinct geological provinces, the eastern limit of exposure of the Musgrave Province, and the north-western margin of the Mesozoic Eromanga Basin. The basement of Tieyon is composed predominantly of amphibolite to granulite facies Birksgate Complex gneisses which are intruded by a number of granitoid bodies of the Pitjantjatjara Supersuite. Unconformably overlying this basement are sediments of the Eromanga Basin, the Neogene Hamilton Basin and Quaternary aeolian and alluvial/fluvial sediments. In 2001, the GSSA (then known as the Geological Survey Branch, Primary Industries and Resources South Australia) undertook a regional bedrock drilling programme across Tieyon. This was followed up in 2006 with a reconnaissance mapping and sampling programme. Preparations for making the current 100K mapsheet began in 2011 and included compiling and ground truthing the data collected during 2006. Extensive additional mapping was completed by October 2011. A significant amount of petrographic, geochemical, isotopic and geochronological data was also collected and analysed to complement field observations.
