This palaeovalley map of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands, South Australia, shows the interpreted distribution of sediment-filled palaeovalleys that are hidden beneath the surface of modern day sandplains, dunefields and creeks. The map has been produced as part of the Goyder Institute for Water Research’s "Facilitating Long-term Outback Water Solutions (G-FLOWS)" Project. The G-FLOWS research programme, undertaken via a partnership between the SA Government's Department for Environment and Water (DEW), the CSIRO, the Flinders University of South Australia, the Department for Energy and Mining (DEM) and the Geological Survey of South Australia, is applying new and innovative geophysical and hydrogeological techniques developed in the previous two G-FLOWS projects stages, combined with a variety of field evaluation techniques including drilling, to map the untapped palaeovalley groundwater resources within the APY Lands. Stage 3 of the project utilised new airborne electromagnetic (AEM) survey geophysical data, that had been collected during 2016 under the sponsorship of the South Australian Government’s PACE Targeting initiative, to detect the actual whereabouts of the buried older regolith sediments through measuring their conductive response contrast, produced by the presence within them of variably saline pore fluids, when compared to the conductivity of the underlying crystalline basement. The subject map was compiled using the AEM data and newly acquired drilling data from two selected hydrogeological control sites in the vicinity of the community of Kaltjiti/Fregon (Costar et al., 2019). The methodology used to produce this map is described in Krapf et al. (2019). This broad-scale map is intended to show the extent of the palaeovalleys that lie under cover within the APY Lands, besides providing information about the locations of the deepest parts of the palaeovalleys, as identified via thalweg mapping. The map will serve as a guide for those doing more detailed future hydrogeological investigations across the APY lands, that aim to discover additional groundwater resources.
