The SADME 1980-1981 Burra mine field mapping project was undertaken at short notice, in order to collect unique geological data and location survey information from the lower benches of the then actively worked open pit mine, before the newly exposed ore and host rocks became in the very near future either mined out or flooded by the cessation of mine dewatering (as the groundwater extraction rate then being necessary to allow mining was ~ 10 ML/day). Recent (as of now) major technical advances in computer-based geological modelling and data visualization methods have allowed the Geological Survey of South Australia to create a digital model of the mine's geology from stored data that was obtained by the above described project: this data hitherto has only existed in hard copy records kept by the Department.
